Reading & Writing
The SUPERKIDS curriculum includes Word Work, and reading of Fiction and Non-fiction texts.
Word Work within this curriculum includes new memory and pattern words weekly. Students use Decodable Readers and work books to practice decoding and encoding, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.
Non-fiction texts include eight issues of SUPER magazine. Students read magazines to practice comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.
Fiction texts include Book Club books. Students read fiction texts to practice comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.
The Writing Workshop curriculum allows for differentiation in the progression of student writing. Students are introduced to authentic writing experiences first with a Mentor Text (Fiction or Non-fiction text) to observe and emulate traits in their own writing. They are guided within a mini-lesson, then given writing time to try the skill modeled that day. After writing time, students may review writing tips or share their writing during the final step, sharing time.
